Garage and Loft Clearance: Tips for Tackling the Clutter

Lofts and garages are where things go to be forgotten. Christmas decorations, old toys, boxes from previous moves, paint tins and tools – they build up until there is no room left.
Safety first in the loft
Only stand on boarded areas or joists, use good lighting, and never carry heavy boxes down a ladder on your own. If the loft is not boarded or the hatch is awkward, it is often safer to let a clearance team do it.
Check boxes before they go
Lofts often hide old photos, letters, certificates and documents. Have a quick look in each box, or ask your clearance team to set aside anything personal.
Deal with chemicals carefully
Garages commonly hold old paint, oil, weedkiller and cleaning products. Some of these need to go to a household waste recycling centre rather than the bin. Check before you mix them in with general rubbish.
Be honest about "just in case"
If you have not used something in years, you probably won't. Tools and equipment in good condition can go to someone who will use them.
Do it all at once
If you are clearing the loft, it is often worth doing the garage, shed and garden at the same time. One visit is usually cheaper than several.
